Amazon.nl launches in the Netherlands with discounts for Dutch customers, but some items still cheaper on Amazon.de

Amazon has re-launched in the Netherlands, now offering a complete online store with 100 million products. Prior to this, the Amazon.nl site only sold e-books and Kindles with Dutch customers forced to use Amazon.de or other online shops for online shopping.

This is likely to shake up the e-commerce in the Netherlands with big players like Bol.com now having to compete with the online shopping goliath. The question is whether Dutch consumers will benefit.

Exclusive deals for the Dutch (and expats)

The launch of Amazon.nl also has some exclusive launch-day deals for Dutch customers and those living in the Netherlands.

For example, a launch-day deal on premium wireless headphones offers the Sony WH-1000XM3 bluetooth wireless headphones for 199 EURO – that’s a 180 discount from the original price! Amazon.de has the same pair for 275.99 (also discounted but not as much). This deal is no longer available at time of writing.

Another deal is on iRobot Roomba robotic house cleaners. Amazon.nl is selling these at €279.99 (at the time of writing). The same product is €333.98 on Amazon.de. The original price is €499.

Another good deal on Amazon.nl is on Fujifilm Instax Mini which is priced at €37.99. This same camera is €63.93 on Amazon.de.

The Fitbit Versa 2 SE smartwatch is also discounted to €149.99 whereas it costs €179.00 on the German site.

Deals seem to change over the course of the day and new ones can become available. Go to the special launch offers page on Amazon.nl to see what else is being discounted right now.

Still price differences between DE and NL

However, despite these launch deals there are discrepancies between Amazon.nl and Amazon.de. In some cases it is still cheaper to purchase items from the German store.

For example, Amazon.de offers a Panasonic Lumix Travellerzoom camera for €280.77 whereas the NL site offers the exact same model at a much higher price: €543.75. That’s encroaching on double the price on the NL store due to the unique discount offered on DE.

There must be more cases like this also so don’t assume that the Dutch site offers equivalent value for money as Amazon.de or vice versa.

Switching Prime membership from Amazon.de to Amazon.nl

Many expats will have Prime accounts for Amazon.de in order to get Amazon shipped for free from the German site. The re-launch of Amazon.nl therefore may require switching Prime membership over at some point or making a decision whether to do so.

Luckily at the moment Amazon.de Prime members can get a month for free on Amazon.nl because of these circumstances. Thereafter Prime NL costs 2.99 per month.
