The Netherlands is a great place to purchase or lease an electric car in 2022.
Thanks to the SEPP (electric vehicle subsidy) private individuals can get up to €3350 towards lease or purchase of a new EV and €2000 for used cars too.
Can you get an electric car for €12000?
The subsidy scheme allows car buyers to use it for vehicles priced between €12,000 and €44,000.
New electric cars start at a higher price tag than €12,000, so if you want to buy a €12,000 electric car it will be a used vehicle. You can find a range of used electric cars at Auto.nl with finance options available.
Buying new electric cars start from €18,250 at the lowest. Auto.nl also stock new electric cars with finance options. Availability may be tight while the SEPP subsidy scheme is yet to run out.
However if you are looking for an electric vehicle and have a lower budget available then leasing is a popular option. The SEPP subsidy is also available for leasing.

What about leasing? Is that cheaper?
It can be cheaper to lease if you are only thinking in terms of monthly payments. Leasing is a good option if purchasing a car is out of your budget: you can get a high-spec electric vehicle for a fixed monthly amount and no extra costs such as insurance or maintenance.
Of course you won’t own the car when the lease is over, but if you’re only planning on staying in the Netherlands for a few years you may not want to buy a car.
Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 has been called the best car of 2021 by AutoExpress and the “best car you can buy” if you can afford it. You can lease one for €579 p/m directly from Hyundai.
For more leasing options see the car leasing in the Netherlands guide.
